September Reflections

Paw Print Writer: P. Kaibah Robinson

As the semester slowly inches forward, it’s easy to get lost in the daily grind of assignments, practices, and exams. Whether you're a student or a student-athlete, it's important to pause every once in a while and reflect on the past month. Taking time to look back allows you to see how much progress you've made, even if it doesn't always feel like that at the moment. Reflection can be a powerful tool to remind yourself that you’re not stagnant—you’re growing, learning, and getting better, both in the classroom and on the field or court.

A Month of Growth

The start of a new semester always feels full of possibilities. But as the weeks roll by, it can be hard to notice how much has changed since the first day. For students, the past month may have been filled with late-night study sessions, quizzes, and project deadlines. For student-athletes, add in practice schedules, games, and travel, and it can feel like everything is moving at a breakneck pace. It’s easy to focus so much on what's coming next that you forget to acknowledge how far you've already come.

That’s why taking a moment to reflect is so valuable. Think about the goals you set for yourself at the start of the semester—academically and athletically. How close are you to reaching those goals? What small victories have you achieved along the way? Whether it’s mastering a difficult concept in class, shaving a few seconds off your time, or making a great play in practice, these are signs of growth. They’re reminders that the hard work you’re putting in is paying off, even if it doesn’t always feel that way in the day-to-day grind.

Avoiding Stagnation

Without reflection, it’s easy to feel stuck. You might find yourself thinking, “Am I making any progress?” when the reality is that you’re moving forward each day. Regular reflection helps prevent that feeling of stagnation because it allows you to recognize both the small and significant steps you’ve taken. Even when the progress seems slow, it’s still progress. It’s important to remember that growth isn’t always linear—there will be ups and downs, but every challenge you face is part of your overall development.

For student-athletes, reflecting on both your academic and athletic journey is key. Juggling these two demanding aspects of your life can sometimes feel overwhelming, but looking back can show you how you're managing and improving in both areas. It helps you see that you're not just spinning your wheels—you’re moving closer to the end of the semester and the goals you've set.

The Semester is Getting Shorter

Each day, the semester inches closer to the finish line. By reflecting on the past month, you can better prepare for the months ahead. You’ll also be able to identify areas where you might need to adjust your strategy, whether that’s making more time for studying, focusing on recovery, or honing in on specific skills during practice. The semester may be long, but it’s also moving quickly, and acknowledging that progress will keep you motivated.

In the end, reflection reminds you that you’re not stagnant. You’re making moves, and each step forward, no matter how small, is worth celebrating.
