Five years ago, students all over the world packed their bags for spring break, expecting to return in a week. But we never did. Instead, our world shifted overnight—classrooms became screens, sports fields emptied, and the idea of "normal" completely changed. The COVID-19 pandemic altered everything we knew, forcing us to adapt in ways we never imagined.
The Ups and Downs of Virtual Life
For some, online learning became an opportunity to explore independence, strengthen family bonds, and even discover new hobbies. Students picked up painting, learned to cook, and finally had time to read books they never got around to. Athletes adjusted their training, running solo workouts and finding creative ways to stay in shape. Some people even thrived in this period of self-discovery.
But for others, the pandemic was isolating. Being stuck at home, away from friends, and the energy of campus life took a toll on my mental health. Some students faced personal losses, economic hardships, and struggles in difficult home environments. The world felt uncertain, and navigating education and sports in this new reality was not easy.
What Stayed the Same, What Changed Forever
Today, much of life has returned to normal. Classes are in person, stadiums are full, and the social energy on campus is alive again. However, some pandemic-era changes have remained for the better. Virtual learning options still exist, giving students more flexibility. Mental health awareness has improved, with more resources available for those who need support. Perhaps most importantly, we all learned just how resilient we are. And thankfully we had TikTok to get us through it all.
A Lesson in Gratitude
Surviving a global pandemic is no small feat. As students and athletes, you made it through one of the toughest challenges in modern history. So as we look back, let’s remember not to take life for granted. Celebrate every practice, every late-night study session, and every moment spent with friends. You endured, you adapted, and you grew. Here’s to the future—stronger, wiser, and ready for whatever comes next.
