Raising Environmental Awareness at Adams State

Paw Print Writer: Jaden Johnson

Colorado Universities stand at the forefront of environmental consciousness, with an increasing, and significant commitment to begin or continue sustainable practices and awareness. One of the major environmental issues facing our campuses and communities is climate change. With its devastating effects on ecosystems, weather patterns, and human livelihoods, climate change demands crucial attention. Colorado, known for its landscapes and outdoor recreational opportunities, is particularly vulnerable to the impacts of a changing climate. From more frequent and intense wildfires to diminishing snowfall, the signs of climate change are evident across the state.

To combat these challenges, Adams State students and faculty need to take proactive steps to raise awareness and implement sustainable practices. Environmental clubs, student organizations, and academic programs are at the forefront of these efforts, organizing events, workshops, and campaigns to educate and engage the campus community. From tree-planting initiatives to campus-wide recycling programs, these grassroots movements drive positive change and instill a sense of environmental responsibility among students.

Additionally, colleges are integrating sustainability into their curriculum, offering courses and majors focused on environmental studies, renewable energy, and conservation. By providing students with the knowledge and skills to address environmental issues, colleges are empowering the next generation of leaders to make a difference in their communities and beyond.

As members of the Adams State community, there are numerous ways students can contribute to environmental awareness and action. Simple changes in daily habits, such as reducing energy consumption, conserving water, and minimizing waste, can have a significant impact. Choosing reusable over single-use items, such as water bottles and bags, is another effective way to reduce waste and pollution.

Here is a more detailed list of simple things you can easily do to be more environmentally in tune:

  1. Bring a reusable water bottle with you.

  2. Use reusable containers or bags to store things versus plastic.

  3. Bring your grocery bags to the store.

  4. Save water by turning the water off when it is not necessary.

  5. Turn the lights off when you leave the room.

  6. Walk, bike, or carpool to class if you live close to or on campus especially!

  7. Hug a tree.

Moreover, students can advocate for sustainable policies and practices within their institutions, urging administrators to prioritize environmental sustainability in decision-making processes. Whether through petitions, rallies, or meetings with campus leaders, students have the power to drive meaningful change and hold their institutions accountable.

Engaging with local communities is also essential in promoting environmental awareness and action. Volunteering with environmental organizations, participating in community clean-up events, and supporting sustainable businesses are all ways students can make a positive impact beyond campus borders.

In conclusion, environmental awareness at Adams State needs to be a growing movement driven by students, faculty, and staff committed to creating a more sustainable future. By raising awareness about environmental issues, implementing sustainable practices, and advocating for change, colleges are shaping the leaders and innovators of tomorrow who will confront the challenges of climate change. Together, we can build an even greener, more resilient Colorado.
