Navigating the Winter Wonderland: A Guide for College Students in Colorado

Writer: P. Kaibah Robinson

Welcome to the enchanting state of Colorado, where the mountains are high, and the winters are higher! College life here is an adventure, especially when the snow starts to fall. So, buckle up, because I'm about to guide you through the magical journey of preparing for the Colorado winter months.

As you step outside, you'll quickly realize that Colorado weather is as unpredictable as your Wi-Fi signal. The secret to surviving and thriving in this winter wonderland is the art of layering. It's like playing dress-up but with a purpose. It is best to start with a moisture-wicking base, throw on a cozy insulating layer, and top it off with a waterproof jacket. Although Alamosa may not get as cold or have as much snow as other parts of Colorado, it is still a challenge to adapt to, especially for those not used to the weather. Another way to prepare for the cold weather is by investing in some winter snow boots. Your favorite sneakers may be cool, but they might not be enough to keep your feet warm in the snow. Invest in a sturdy pair of waterproof boots with some serious traction. Not only will your feet thank you, but you'll also be less likely to slip on your way to class.

Winter in Colorado is synonymous with snow sports. Whether you're a seasoned pro or not, this is your chance to try something out of your comfort zone. Many colleges are built around attractions that coincide with the environment, so why not try your hand at skiing, snowboarding, or even ice skating? It is only a couple hours drive to Wolf Creek Pass where you can enjoy all the winter fun. When the lakes freeze over, it's time to unleash your inner figure skater. Many towns set up outdoor ice rinks during the winter months. Grab some friends, lace up your skates, and prepare for laughter, spins, and maybe a few not-so-graceful falls. Embrace the adrenaline rush, and soon you'll be riding the slopes like a Colorado native. While you’re out on these winter excursions, it is also important to stay warm. Hot chocolate is great for warming up on the colder days in Colorado, and it tastes great! Experiment with different recipes – add marshmallows, sprinkle cinnamon, or go all out with whipped cream and chocolate drizzle. Not only will it keep you warm, but as mentioned, it'll also turn those chilly winter nights into a cozy adventure.

Winter isn't just about surviving; it's about thriving as well. Indulge in hearty, soul-warming comfort food. Master the art of making chili, soup, or stew. Host a winter potluck with friends, and soon you'll have a repertoire of comforting recipes to get you through those frosty nights. Also, don't pack away your hiking boots just because it's winter. There are some winter hiking trails near and within Alamosa and other neighboring towns where you and some like minded friends could venture into a winter wonderland. It's not just a workout; it's a visual feast of glistening snow, frozen lakes, and majestic landscapes. Zapata Falls, located near the Great Sand Dunes, is very beautiful and refreshing in the summer, but during the winter is said to be a magical winter wonderland with the waterfall frozen in place. Just remember to layer up, bring friends, and let someone know your plans – safety first!

If the cold isn't your cup of cocoa, bring the winter wonderland indoors. Decorate your dorm or apartment with cozy blankets, fairy lights, and winter-themed decorations. It's like creating your own snug retreat from the frosty outdoors. Combat the cold by adding warmth to your living space. Invest in soft, fuzzy blankets, get some plush throw pillows, and consider adding a space heater. Creating a cozy and inviting environment will make coming home after a chilly day of classes something to look forward to.

Furthermore, Colorado isn't just about outdoor adventures. The state has a vibrant cultural scene, and winter is the perfect time to explore it. Attend local winter festivals, art shows, or theater performances. You'll not only stay warm indoors but also discover the rich cultural tapestry that makes Colorado unique. Colorado's winter months are not just about surviving; they're about thriving and making memories that will last a lifetime. From mastering the art of layering to embracing winter sports and savoring comfort food, you're now armed with the knowledge to conquer the Colorado winter like a seasoned snow warrior. So, bundle up, grab your hot chocolate, and get ready to make the most of your winter adventure in the Centennial State!
