Finals week is that challenging time of the semester that every college student faces with a mix of trepidation and determination. As a grad student who has had their fair share of taking undergraduate finals, I understand the pressures and stresses that come with this period. In this article, I offer some advice to undergraduates to help them not only survive but thrive during finals week.
One of the most valuable lessons I learned during my undergraduate years is the importance of planning. Start by creating a realistic study schedule that allocates time for each subject based on the weight of the exam and your familiarity with the material. Break down your study sessions into manageable chunks, and don't forget to include breaks to avoid burnout. Something essential is being able to identify the subjects that require more attention and prioritize your study time accordingly. Focus on the most challenging topics first when your mind is fresh and alert.
Something I wish I would have done more often is take advantage of the resources provided by your professors, teaching assistants, and the university. Attend review sessions, visit office hours, and seek clarification on any confusing concepts. Forming study groups with classmates can also be beneficial, as discussing and teaching the material to others can enhance your understanding. Another helpful tool is rather than passively reading and highlighting notes, engage in active learning techniques. Practice solving problems, create flashcards, teach the material to a friend, or participate in group discussions. However, something to remember throughout this whole process is remembering to take care of yourself during finals week. Adequate sleep, proper nutrition, and regular exercise contribute to better focus and cognitive function. Avoid the temptation to pull all-nighters, as fatigue can impair your ability to perform well during exams. Maintaining a positive mindset is also important as you need to remind yourself that you have prepared to the best of your ability. Stress is a natural part of finals week, but managing it is crucial. Incorporate stress-relief activities into your routine, such as meditation, deep breathing exercises, or short breaks for a walk outside.
Now as a grad student reflecting on my undergraduate finals experiences, I understand the intensity of this period. By planning, prioritizing, utilizing resources, practicing self-care, reviewing strategically, and you can navigate finals week with confidence. Good luck with your finals!
