With midterms wrapping up, the air is crisp, and your hoodie collection is finally getting some use, which means it’s prime time to get outside and soak in the fall colors. Lucky for us, Adams State is surrounded by some of the most underrated fall foliage in Colorado. Whether you’ve got a free afternoon, a weekend day, or just need a break from campus stress, here are the best places near Alamosa to catch those golden vibes this October.
🍁 1. Conejos River Valley: A Local Favorite
About an hour southwest of campus, the Conejos River Valley is hands-down one of the best places to see fall colors. Picture this: golden cottonwoods lining the river, aspens glowing on the hillsides, and a quiet road winding through it all. Take a drive along Highway 17 past Antonito, and you’ll see what we mean. Pack a thermos of coffee, cue up your chill playlist, and enjoy the views.
🍂 2. Alamosa Canyon: A Hidden Gem
Just a short drive from campus, Alamosa Canyon is a go-to if you want quick nature without a long road trip. The leaves along the canyon burst into shades of amber and yellow this time of year, especially in the early morning or before sunset. Bring a friend (or your favorite podcast), and take a scenic drive or short hike to soak it in.
🍁 3. Great Sand Dunes National Park: Fall With a Twist
Yeah, the Sand Dunes aren’t the first place you think of for fall colors — but trust us on this one. The cottonwoods along Medano Creek blaze yellow in October, contrasting with the beige sand and snow-capped Sangre de Cristo Mountains. It’s an epic combo of desert, forest, and mountain all in one spot. It’s also a great place to chill, hike, or just snap some photos for your socials.
🍂 4. Rio Grande National Forest: Classic Colorado Vibes
If you’re in the mood for a weekend mini road trip, head up into the Rio Grande National Forest. The higher you go, the more aspens you’ll find. Even though the peak color at elevation usually hits late September to early October, there are still pockets glowing gold well into mid-October. Just be ready for cooler temps!
Final Tips for Fall Chasers:
• Go early or late in the day — better light, fewer people.
• Bring layers (and snacks). Fall weather can flip fast.
• Don’t wait — wind or snow can take the leaves down quickly.
• Take pictures, but also just enjoy the view.
So take a break, unplug for a bit, and go chase those fall vibes. You’ve earned it.
